Flats to Rent in Croydon

Croydon lies on the London Road due south of London Victoria and nearly equidistant between the capital and the M25. There has been human settlement here since Roman times, and the town was recorded in the Doomsday Book of 1086 as having nearly 400 residents. The town is considerably larger than that now with a vibrant stand-alone economy that is one of the biggest in the metropolitan area. It is also a popular commuter destination and an important centre for learning in South London. Every year more people seek flats to rent in Croydon, and every year more of those people trust Oaks Estate Agents to find them their ideal flat.

What Croydon has to offer

As well as having excellent transport links, Croydon also has more schools than most other boroughs in Greater London. This is great for current or prospective parents who, understandably, want to make sure their children can have a great education in the area.

Currently, Croydon has around 95 primary schools, as well as 21 secondary schools and four further education establishments – including John Ruskin and Croydon Colleges.

People who’ve never been here tend to wonder why this town has become such a hot destination for commuters, students, restaurateurs, entrepreneurs and more. The answer is that it provides many of the benefits of London, without the often overwhelming atmosphere of the capital. You can visit your favourite bistro or go for a walk in a beautifully manicured park without having to travel an hour on the tube or take your life into your hands. In short, it is a liveable town with big city amenities wrapped in a small town scale. Let’s look at some of those amenities.

Some people looking for flats to rent in Croydon are on a budget and will cook at home most of the time. For them, the town provides a variety of markets large, small and in between. Standard supermarkets, specialty markets, neighbourhood mum and pop stores, convenience stores, greengrocers and more provide ample choices for the food shopper. Should eating out be more your style, you’ll find the widest variety of restaurants of any town in South London. In fact, it’s a little reminiscent of Leicester Square, but with better parking. There’s Italian, Greek, Turkish, Japanese, Indian, Mediterranean, Chinese as well as Fish & Chips and Bangers and Mash. Just to name a few of your choices.

As we mentioned at the outset, Croydon is just a short hop down the A23 from Central London. It is also well-served by National Rail and commuter lines such as the London Overground and the Thameslink, which will deliver commuters to London Victoria in less than half an hour. Multiple lines also extend to the coast with Brighton and Dover accessible in just over 1 and 2 hours respectively.

As a resident or visitor to Croydon, you will never be short of places to go and things to do. Whether you want to shop, soak up some local culture or just enjoy the great outdoors, this is the place for you.

Younger ones and those wanting to just enjoy some green space (a rarity in a capital city), Wandle Park and Croyham Hurst Woods are great places for exploring, walking, riding and escaping.

There’s then the Museum of Croydon, offering insight into the town’s social history, whilst the Croydon Airport Visitor Centre offers a rare insight into the inner workings of a former airport terminal and control centre.

Then, last but not least, the Whitgift Shopping Centre has a wide range of shops that will suit all your spending and shopping needs.

Looking to rent in Croydon? Good choice. But we expect that transport will be at the top of your priority list when it comes to making a decision on where to lay your head, and rightly so. Fortunately, Croydon boasts a fantastic transport network that links the town to Central London and beyond.

First and foremost, the town is home to eight council car parks and a wide range of private parking options, too. This makes it a great area for anyone who drives – be that a visitor or resident – and is looking to access the town centre.

There is also a brilliant tram network that will take you around the borough and, importantly, link you up to the famous London Underground – meaning the hustle and bustle of the tube is only a 10-minute ride away.

Then, should you be looking further afield, you’ll be pleased to know that the town also boasts three railway stations. South Croydon, East Croydon and West Croydon stations collectively offer routes directly into London and much further afield. Indeed if you fancied it, you could be on Brighton beach in just over 40 minutes!
